We’ve all met people who look really young, and, once we get to know them, we realise that they’re actually much older than they appear. There are reasons for this and no, it’s not because of cosmetics or “magic” anti-age treatments! It’s actually all about diet and toxicity! Yes, that’s right, what you eat has a much more significant impact on your looks than the cosmetics industry would like to admit!
Ensuring that your diet has the appropriate nutrients is absolutely crucial if you want to remain looking and feeling younger longer. And while your way of life and the level of stress you are subject to will always have a significant impact on your wellbeing, it’s not always under your control. What you eat, on the other hand, is. Stay with me until the end of this article, and you’ll realise that looking younger is much easier than you thought!
The Top 10 Foods that Will Slow Down the ageing process
Starting off with a favourite from the ancient world– the figx. Rightfully named an “anti-ageing” food by our ancestors, figs have always been a staple in the diets of health-conscious individuals.
Figs contain a large number of antioxidants and flavonoids. Their skin is rich in antioxidants, and their seeds are full of omega-3 fatty acids. Not only that, but figs also contain an enzyme called Ficain, praised for its powerful anti-inflammatory effect, and it slows down the rate at which bodily functions decay.
2. Collagen-rich foods
Collagen is responsible for the wellbeing of your entire body, making up a large part of its protein content. In terms of looking young, collagen helps your skin remain elastic. More often than not, the people who struggle with skin sagging are lacking in collagen. The good news is that you can easily boost your collagen levels with these tasty dietary additions:
- Red, Orange and Dark Green Veggies
- Citrus Fruits
- White Tea
Chinese immortality mushrooms are good for your health, who would’ve guessed, right? Jokes aside, while Chaga mushrooms are not something your doctor would prescribe, in traditional Chinese medicine they’ve been praised for their beneficial effects on cellular healthy and stress reduction. Today, chaga tea is widely available on the markets in the west and we can all benefit from a sip of it every now and then.
We’ve already established that fish is great. But salmon is something else! Very rich in antioxidants, salmon is a powerful ally in your battle against ageing. Just like other types of fish, salmon is also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids – docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It can significantly improve the health of your skin and help you fight off disease. But wait, there’s more! Salmon also contains other dietary benefits, with its high protein and vitamin D content, making it a staple in many healthy diets.
Another great ally on your journey to eternal youth is the berry family. Blueberries and raspberries, in particular, are highly praised for their rich bioflavonoids and resveratrol content. Having a quick berry snack every now and then will help your body process Vitamin C better, improve your blood circulation as well as provide you with much-needed antioxidants. They ’re some of the ultimate foods to combat ageing!
A prime ingredient in many traditional dishes from the Far East, Turmeric enjoys quite the reputation in alternative medicine circles. Praised for its tissue regeneration capabilities, it’s a great addition to any anti-ageing diet! The best part about turmeric is that it can go well with pretty much anything – burger meat, taco mixes, hummus, you name it!
7. Bone Broth
Bone broth is not only quick and easy to prepare but also great for your health! Rich in hyaluronic acid, bone broth will make your bones stronger while providing you with much-needed collagen at the same time!
Maca is known for its energising properties. Yet another staple from traditional medicine, it will help you combat stress, along with all of its harmful effects!
Avocados provide you with essential healthy fats, minerals (magnesium and potassium), helping you with fluid ratios. They also allow you to avoid bloating.
10. Animal Fats
Contrary to, (hopefully not so) popular belief (anymore) dietary fat doesn’t magically turn into belly fat as soon as it comes in contact with your lips. As a matter of fact, animal fats from grass-fed, organically raised animals are very beneficial for your body and should be a staple in any health and wellness-oriented diet, so long as they don’t clash with your other dietary or lifestyle choices. And, in case you decide to avoid animal fats completely, you should most definitely do some research on the available supplements and ensure that you aren’t missing out on vital nutrients!

I realise what I’m listing in this article is far from the fountain of youth and it might sound like I’m overselling some of the things on my list, but believe me when I say this – they work.
