Some people believe that they’ll experience the true happiness and success that they dreamt of if they know the ultimate purpose that their life serves. They want to discover the best ways to pursue it so they can enjoy a sense of fulfillment. Asking yourself the question “what is my purpose in life?” won’t be all you need to do.
You need to be more specific and ask yourself these questions:
- In what way should you use my time and abilities so you can make a difference?
- How can you put away the thought that I’m only wasting time at work? Is there anything else you want to do other than just wait for your paycheck?
- What activities can give more meaning and joy to your life?
- What direction should you choose that will help me feel better?
Importance of a Life Purpose
You might be living an inefficient and stressful life because you have no purpose at all. It’s one of the vital factors to achieve happiness which can also affect your career. Some usual life purposes include success, popularity, and fortune.
Let’s say in ten years you’ve become successful in your business. You’ve established a profitable business, you’ve become popular, or you’ve amassed a significant amount of wealth. Despite all these, you still feel unhappy. Why? Because along the way, you had to sacrifice a lot of important things such as:
- Spending time with your loved ones
- Going on a holiday with friends
- Traveling the world
- Finding and dating a lifetime partner;
- Or having kids
The only problem in this scenario is that you still haven’t found your true purpose. Although you became wealthy and successful, true contentment is missing. Maybe all you wanted in life was a simple one with family and friends.
Discovering Your Life Purpose
Discovering your purpose in life is not something that you can do overnight. You have to take action by doing new things and by trial and error until you find what sparks your interests.
Every person has a unique life purpose. For famous people, it may be to help improve the society, For others, it could be to provide quality life to their children. Everyone has their own purpose in life. If you’re unsure of how to discover it, take a look at the following suggestions:
Get into the flow
When was the last time that you’re in the zone? It’s a time when you’re in the flow. You don’t seem to notice the tick of the clock because you’re so focused on your tasks. Flow is a state of optimal experience that arises in a specific setting. These can be a series of challenges that grips your skills, stretching yourself to your limits to accomplish the tasks.
To get into the zone, you have to look for an activity that includes a series of tests that you’re able to solve with effort. For example, you might be so absorbed when writing or when presenting data and financial projections. This state can aid you to detach yourself from your emotional awareness thus removing negative thoughts and help you discover your purpose.
Remember the time when you’ve shown exceptional value
Think back to how you’ve managed to display your leadership skills and lead your team to success. Where did that motivation come from? Did you feel the excitement and fulfillment in doing those things? If you don’t remember, try asking people around you when you delivered something and exceeded their expectations. These are the things that you’re good at and also love to do.
Determine the things that come naturally to you
It’s not always about your ability to adapt quickly to technical matters or solving complex problems around you. It’s how you break down compound things into simpler ones or your notable talent for transforming ideas into actions.
Take a look at what you do daily. These could be the simple joy of solving problems, the ideas you can form, or how you touch the lives of the people. You can bring your story to your career and business in a way that showcases your unique talent. These are some general skills that can be useful to your professional career.
Following Your Purpose
After discovering your purpose in life, it’s time to pursue and reach it. It’s more about the meaning of your purpose and not only about being motivated to do so. It’s more about the impact on your life and career, not about the paycheck that determines your fulfillment.
You have to live your purpose. Collect positive energy around you to build momentum. You can do this by practicing a habit that is hyper-focused around your success and goal. Get up every day and prepare for work because it’s not something that just comes to you.
Remove negative thoughts that cloud your mind. Don’t focus on what you’ve lost along the way or the rejections because it’s part of life. Push forward and fulfill your purpose even if you’re the only one on that path.
Reassess Your Life Purpose
As you move forward, you’ll explore the evolution of your purpose as you feel more aware in life. You might have already set yourself on another but end up in one thing overall. You might discover another way, zone, or talent that you’re good at. When you decide what your purpose is, you must be open to the fact that it may change with time.
Most importantly, if it’s not working for you anymore then change it for the better. There’s no problem with that, it just means that you’re trying new things. When a door closes, try to look for another one until eventually, the right one will open for you. When you look again for something that can motivate you towards success, you’ll realize that it’s all worth it in the end.
Finding your life purpose is not about how you started but it’s about assessing why. Your calling will become clearer to you as you reach it. And you’ll live a life with something that can be remembered and admired by the people around you. It’s about your worth as a person and your definition of destiny. Take action, don’t be afraid of detours, and make good relationships along the way.
