Why Start a Professional Speaking Career?
Public speaking is one of the quickest ways to grow your business, career, or your personal image. It can also help you make a huge difference in the world and your bank account. You don’t have to be amusing or extroverted because nowadays, what people want is originality.
Through public speaking, you can:
- Inspire your followers with your message
- Position yourself as a person with authority
- Add value to any business firm
- Make your seminars and engagements
- Share your authentic story and influence others
Speaking is so far one of the world’s top-earning professions for some reasons. You have only needed an idea of how to monetize your speaking career and grow your business. In other industries or professions, there are always rules, which need to be followed. But in public speaking, you only need to have the desire to become the best speaker you ever dreamed of.
Starting a Professional Speaking Profession
Exercise your skills
If you want to take a big step forward to get paid, you need to take this seriously. You need to learn how to become a one-person show by being the director, scriptwriter, and actor. Being an expert in a particular field is nothing new anymore. Audiences and event planners are increasingly looking for an extraordinary experience.
There are thousands of speakers out there, so you must be dedicated to honing your talent so you can get paid and be asked to return. You must be outstanding, highly engaging to your audience, and be highly informative. Study and practice your skills until you master this ability.
Accept free speeches
As a novice in this area, you can reach out to your local clubs or small chambers of networking groups and offer free speech. This way, you can accumulate experience and practice how you relay your message to the people. Who knows, some listeners might offer you a paying gig after you’ve shown some of your unique speaking ability?
Add value to your audience
After you collect experience and hone your skills, you have to find a way to add value to your listeners. You have to focus on a new added value you can charge your audience. Probably create a formula or a program and give it a name, be specific as to whom you’re going to share it with.
Keep on Marketing
Set your career on the streamline, post across social media your image and your speaking experience. Contact previous groups of people you’ve spoken to for free before and ask them if they have other programs with a budget. You have to go out there and do the work, market your representation and speaking skills.
Start with a small fee
Like any new business, you’ll have little resources, at first. Whatever stage you’re in, set up a standard payment so you may get hired twice or three times a month. If you have products to sell, if allowed, you can offer them to your listeners during your speaking engagements. That’s another way to get paid.
Negotiate adeptly
Getting compensated as a paid speaker is harder than getting paid as a valued speaker. This means that you have to learn how to negotiate and often think of another way of receiving payment rather than cash. Find out if they have a budget or another of value.
Your audience might be able to connect you with their sponsors, who might ask you to mention them in one of your talks. Be creative in providing your budget if you need help from an event planner to smooth things out. However, don’t be afraid to turn down a gig if they can’t provide you with your requirements.
Monetizing your Speaking Career
While you’re growing your speaking career business, you may want to seize every opportunity that may arise. So, what are some ways you can sell your content? You can find the following suggestions helpful as you kick off your career to the next level.
Write a Book
Writing a book can produce more connection with your audience, giving you more credibility and more value to the message you impart. Promote your books through free speaking events or on your website. It’s an effective way to make your speaking career more profitable.
Offer a Consulting Program
Share your expertise, experience, and knowledge with other people and businesses that need guidance for the right price. Consulting roles are in demand for companies and individuals, and they offer high ceiling salaries and benefits. It’s because many companies are seeking unbiased judgment to assist them in their projects while cutting down costs that a regular employee might cause.
Offer a Professional Speaking Engagement
Whether as a guest of a webinar, interview, host, or discussion panelist, these are your expertise. Grab all of them as much as possible since it’s hard to find more paid gigs, even for a seasoned public speaker. Don’t forget to ask for compensation for your shared thoughts and insights.
Promote an Affiliate Website, Product, or Service
An affiliate product or service can be anything from a book to a consulting website. Every time you promote them, you can receive an advertising fee plus a commission when someone makes a purchase. This is a simple way of adding revenue to your speaking career and can be helpful to your audience as well. You’re also helping individuals, organizations, and companies from your network. Make sure you like the product you want to promote and is helpful to your viewers.
Use Social Media Platforms
Some social media platforms offer monetizing schemes. All you have to do is record your speech, tag it using video editing tools, and upload it to your channel. For example, YouTube offers a 55% commission of the revenue from ads placed in your video via AdSense.
Some audiences will be inspired by your story but might forget your key points. A video or a recording is ideal for them to back over things you said. Some audience members might be willing to buy the resource thus, adding to your revenue.
The beauty of uploading videos online is that you don’t need to be present with your audience. Whether you’re sleeping, on vacation, or in another speaking engagement, you’re still potentially earning money. You can also set up an online course where your students can browse through your content at their own pace.
Offer Training Sessions
Set up training sessions or courses with your audience. You could give them the tools to enable them to take your message deeply and apply it. Whether you run a workshop, seminar, or webinar, organizing your speaking engagement can bring you more revenue and help create your proficiency in the industry. You can always use free talks to advertise your seminars to those who are willing to learn the materials fully.
When you’re building your speaking career, don’t rely on one source of income only. You should diversify your sources of revenue to boost your financial security. There are many benefits of being a public speaker that don’t rely on money exclusively.
